I usually slept well on the island. But that night, at some unknown hour, I woke up and saw the moon, huge and bright, in my window. Everything in the room–the bed, the armoire, the washstand with its ewer of water–stood out in stark relief.

I loved the fresh air of the islands. I’d left a window open and the room was chilly. I snuggled into the duvet and watched the curtains sway in the night breeze.

The balcony eventually drew my attention. I was tempted to open the balcony doors and step outside. I’d like to inhale more of the good, salt air.

What if Kent happened to wake up at the same time?

What if he stepped out onto the balcony and I was standing there in my nightdress?

Oh, grow up.

So he sees you on your own balcony. So what?

I tried to imagine what Lisa would tell me, under the circumstances.

I could text message her, and ask.

Except I knew what she would tell me.

Strange. Kent McAllister was so different from Paulo. Paulo, the sophisticated European male, my dream man, my Cary Grant.

Only one language. Well, two if you included ancient Greek, which ought to count, it’s a bitch to master–

But it doesn’t. Not really. You couldn’t talk to anyone in ancient Greek.

An American man from Minneapolis, of all places, who only spoke one language and doesn’t know how to buy produce in an Athens grocery store. A provincial American, even with the Ph.D.

Not my type.

I’d never seen him wear a tie. Not even at his own lecture.

Cary Grant always wore a tie.

OK. I was being ridiculous. I shrugged on my silk wrapper–another Christmas present from Lisa, that–and walked out onto the balcony.
